However, they were not that far apart, and as a result were not as dissimilar as it might appear at first glance. With only 30 years, and an ocean between them, the world of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and the world of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby portray big similarities that even relate to their differences. The overarching theme in the world of Stoker’s Dracula is fear. The progress that occurs in the realm of technology and science does not make people less afraid, but actually gives the opposite effect. This comes from two main points, fear of the unknown, and the lack of consistency in the new technology. One example of this lack of consistency would be when the telegram that gave instructions from Van Helsing to Seward does not arrive on time, it leads to an attack by Dracula that causes the death of Lucy’s mother. Dr. Seward alludes to this horror by st ating, â€Å"The arrival of Van Helsing’s telegram filled me with dismay. Avian Symbolism in The Awakening Essay Kate Chopin consistently uses avian symbolism in the novel The Awakening to represent and Enlighten Edna Pontellier. She begins the novel with the image of a caged bird and throughout the story other birds and avian images appear representing freedom, failure, and choices that Edna, the storys main character, must make. Throughout The Awakening Chopin uses flight and descriptions of birds to express the psychological state of mind of her main character, Edna Pontellier. As the story begins we are immediately introduces to the importance of avian symbolism. The first spoken sentences of the novel, are curiously enough, squawked by a parrot rather than a main character or some other human. Allez vous-en! Allez vous-en! Sapristi! Thats all right! Chopin 3 are the words yelled by this crazed, caged bird. Go away! Go away! For heavens sake! is the translation of this message into English. This message represents the forbidden and taboo thoughts racing through the mind of Edna Pontellier during her post-awakening period. Edna longs to leave her subservient role as the loving, submissive wife and mother that society forces on her. She longs for something more exciting, something of her own choosing and free will. These lines are echoed again immediately prior to her awakening. While the twins are once again playing the same songs on the piano the parrot shrieks, Allez vous-en! Sapristi!. This is the final warning that the parrot relays to Edna. Edna should have listened to the parrots message and escaped from her unsatisfying life immediately. Yet, she chose not to heed his warning and she was destined to end her life in order to be free. In addition to the parrots message, the image of this hostile, shrieking bird is a symbol in and of itself. For like the parrot, Edna is also trapped, not behind the bars of a cage, but by the standards of society and the role that has been appointed to her as a woman. In the same way that the parrot cannot free himself of his cage, Edna cannot ever fully break free of the limitations that society has placed on her as a woman, wife, and mother. Although she makes a conscious effort to separate herself from the people who are holding her back and break free of the boundaries that society has set upon her, she can never fully succeed in satisfying her hunger to live her own life. The next example of the avian imagery in The Awakening comes in the form of a handsome, young charmer named Alcee Arobin. Although on first glance he does not seem to be of or related to birds, upon closer examination we see that his last name syllabicated slowly is pronounced a robin. This bird, the harbinger of spring, is able to fly freely and live in close proximity to humans. Arobin matches this description, for he, as his name implies, flies freely through society and as his reputation suggests becomes close with many women. Admittedly, with..  ingenuous frankness he spoke of what a wicked, undisciplined boy he had been. 78 and to Edna he, talked in a way that astonished her at first and brought crimson to her face 80. Furthermore, he has no regrets or worries when he pursues a relationship with Edna, a married woman. Alcee Arobin is a man who soars through life with no cares at all. He is known for his pursuits with women and is very straightforward when trying to get what he wants. Clearly he disregards the restrictions and rules that society has set up. Many people believed that capalists and communists could not live alongside each other for long and that one system would take over another, however both sides were determined not to be taken over. When the buffer zones were added there was a greater risk of war as the zones were dominated by the USSR who were causing a government domino effect through to the west so the USA and their partners were determined to stop it which caused the Truman Doctrine. The main reasons for the USA to get involved with Vietnam were because of their fear of communism and that communism could take over the Western world and Asia. Another reason why the USA didnt like communism was because in 1945 the USA built and tested the first nuclear bomb on Japan but kept it secret from the Russians even though they were supposed to be allies. This made the Russians very suspicious of America. America also didnt like communism because of their very different political beliefs as the communists were a totalitarian state whilst the USA believed in democracy and were afraid the Russians would try to spread their beliefs around the world. The first way of the USA to get involved was to supply France with money as during World War 2 they had lost control of North Vietnam however managed to keep control of South Vietnam. The USA paid the French armies to regain control of North Vietnam so to keep it capitalist and was thought to be a stand against world wide spread of communism. However in 1949 Americans were worried because China had turned communist and supplied money and weapons to North Vietnam making the war harder to win. The French assumed that they were invincible as they were surrounded by mountains and an airbase but the French miscalculation led to a humiliating defeat and ended French plans to regain control of Vietnam. This meant the USA had to get more involved as  well as take more action as communism continued to get stronger. The USAs next involvement plan was to send military advisors to South Vietnam. In 1954 Eisenhower gave 17 officers sealed orders sending them to Saigon and by January 1961 the number of advisors had grown to 685. However the advisors were not there to fight but to train the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) to combat an expected invasion from the North. These advisors didnt work as the communist Vietcongs seemed to be getting stronger and even though the numbers of advisors were secretly raised it didnt greatly help. The USA soon had to get even more involved as their strategic hamlet programme officials selected villages in South Vietnam which they thought could be easily defended by the Vietcong but didnt work as very few hamlets were secure and the policy was very unpopular with the Vietnamese. Religion was also a problem because Diem favoured Roman Catholics but this led to street protests like a Buddhist monk who set himself alight. Diem soon became increasingly unpopular and was assassinated by ARVN officers who ere worried that the USA would withdraw there support if Diem continued in power. However the assassination made things worse as Diems successors were no better at governing the country. This all led to the USA needing to involve themselves more by using the military. This first happened with the Gulf of Tongking incident which was an excuse for Johnson to get the Gulf of Tongking resolution which allowed him to take all the necessary measures to repel any armed attacks against the forces of the United States and to prevent further aggression. Then in February 1965 Johnson got the opportunity to justify bombing North Vietnam when the Vietcong attack the USAs base at Pleiku. Ten aircraft were destroyed eight US advisors were killed with over a hundred others wounded. Johnson could then call up troops and bomb the North. The operation was called rolling thunder. The planes bombed the key military and industrial targets of North Vietnam but were not allowed to bomb until he felt he could explain his actions to the American people. After that, 3,500 US marines were sent to the airbase of Danang and from then on the Americans took control of South Vietnamese war effort. This all generally happened due to the Americans obsession with communism and their belief of the domino theory, that once one country turned communist, so would the next and next which made the Americans more involved with Vietnam as time went by with the Americans trying to stop the spread of communism across South East Asia.

Leonard expresses the idea that without punishment towards children, they can develop into untamable brats. Using his humorous sarcasm and entertaining message he gets the point across that child rearing is ok and not abuse. Showing uniformed parents/adults that rearing does keep the little ones in line making them learn and respect the adult; rather than their idea of it scarring the kids for life. With Pitt’s article I had found that it was to approach the unknowing; the people without children. It was appropriate in the manner that Pitt’s had showed that this punishment wasn’t as horrible as some people take it to be. Obviously the writing style was in subjective tone, subject meaning opinion; to make it clear how Pitt’s had felt on the topic of spanking children whether or not it be abusive. The tone was at times confusing, he would jump every once and a while off topic then jump back to the topic he was originally. The tone also made it opinionated, stating how the author had felt on â€Å"corporal punishment†. I believe the article good enough to fit into a magazine article with tone stating how Pitt’s had felt about punishment, showed the readers a well rounded article based upon his humorous feelings. Pitt’s evidence was weak, there weren’t many facts or statistic in the article; but then again you can’t really show much information on a topic such as corporal punishment. At one point he put in â€Å"Time/CNN poll† relating towards children becoming spoiled and information on a psychologist studying homes finding that most homes use some sort of corporal punishment, other than that, the article is based upon a opinionated theme. Since Pitt’s doesn’t provide tons of evidence I find that the quality of the article still to be good, and the quantity of evidence just enough because the author also relates to the struggles he faces during the time periods of himself having to use corporal punishment and the reasoning behind him using it. The organization of Pitt’s article was put together nicely. Throughout the whole article Pitt’s states that he believes corporal punishment is put to good us, not once does he go back and question it. The logic was there stating his idea from beginning to end, not changing the purpose of the article. Pitt’s does acknowledge and respond in his own manner to the article, but the way he responds is still through his own opinion; not caving into agreeing with the other point. Through the beginning of the authors paragraph he goes in with a bit of confidence showing this is an opinionated article telling us that Americas’ children have become spoiled. When Pitt’s ends the article he finishes off in one sentence â€Å"Some folks think it’s abuse when you swat a child’s backside, But maybe, sometimes, it’s abuse when you don’t. † . Every last sentence of every paragraph relates to the thesis, completing the main idea, showing Pitt’s purpose through the entire article. I believe Pitt’s writing style altogether worked out in the end. Pitt’s article showed readers his opinion without backing down, this confident article was successful in the sense he stuck to his guns and never questioned or contradicted himself.
